Trail Mix Picks

A slight change in the “Six Mix Picks” as we make the title the “Trail Mix Picks” to ease the tongue twisting nature of the title and gently allow more or fewer picks each week.  You can expect as few as three and as many as ten.  This week we bring you some more ranger talks on the run on two feet and on four feet with humans on the National Mall and horses in Rock Creek Park.  Also, one of the great hidden gems of DC, Dumbarton Oaks holds an autumn  ranger tour.  As the leaves keep falling, and the political campaign season draws to a close, we hope you find a few moments to breathe some crisp autumn air.

  • Ranger led History Dash on the National Mall:  On Saturday, October 23, 2010 at 8:00 am stretch your muscles and exercise your mind by joining a park ranger for a free morning run while learning about several of DC’s scenic sites and lesser known attractions. The route will cover about 3.8 miles. All you need to bring besides your running gear is your own water.  Meet at the Washington Monument. For more information contact Susan Martin at 202-437-1888.
  • Ranger-led Running Tour on the Summer of 1863: This Sunday, October 24, 2010, at 8:00 am take a nice autumn run of 3.5 miles exploring three battles that forever changed the course of the Civil War.  You’ll need your own water and old Civil War uniforms might rub you the wrong way while jogging.   For more information contact Susan Martin.  Meet at the Washington Monument.  The closest metro station is the Smithsonian (exit on the National Mall, turn around and you’ll see the Washington Monument).
